Wim Grunewald

European Patent Attorney

Wim Grunewald is a bioengineer by training (cell and gene biotechnology) and a European patent attorney. He obtained a PhD in Applied Biological Sciences at Ghent University and was active as a researcher in molecular plant biology for 10 years. Between 2015 and 2022 Wim worked as IP manager at the Flemish Institute for Biotechnology (VIB) where he was the IP responsible for the microbiology and neurobiology department.

Wim focuses on advising on patentability, building a patent portfolio, freedom to operate and infringement, as well as on drafting patent applications, handling grant procedures and defending or attacking existing patents.

His field of work includes various disciplines within the life sciences ranging from microbiology (human and plant microbiome, yeast fermentations, bacterial production) over plant (bio)technology to diagnosis and therapy of human (neurological) disorders, including the use of CRISPR/Cas, antisense oligonucleotide technology, gene therapy, antibodies, biologicals.

Wim is fluent in Dutch and English and has a basic knowledge of French.
